Omans History A new era began in 1970 when Sultan Qaboos bin Said changed the name of the country from the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman to simply Oman. Archaeological evidence has suggested an industrial presence around Aybut Al Auwal dating to around 100,000 years ago. Oman  is the site of pre-historic human habitation, stretching back over 100,000 years. The region was impacted by powerful invaders, including  other Arab tribes ,  Portugal  and  Britain . Oman once possessed the island of  Zanzibar , on the east coast of Africa as a colony. Oman also held  Gwadar  as a colony for many   years. Mazoon, a Persian name used to refer to Oman's region, which was part of the Sasanian Empire . The most successful Leader of Oman Q aboos bin Said Al Said. Born in  18 November 1940 – passed 10 January 2020) was  Sultan of Oman  from 23 July 1970 until his death in 2020. A fifteenth-generation descendant of the founder of the  House of Al Said , he was the longest-serving leader in the  Middle East  and  Arab world  at the time of his death. having ruled for almost half a century. The only son of  Said bin Taimur ,  Sultan of Muscat and Oman , Qaboos was educated in  Suffolk ,  England . After graduating from the  Royal Military Academy Sandhurst , he served briefly in the  British Army . He returned to Oman in 1966 and was the subject of considerable restrictions from his father. In 1970,  Qaboos ascended to the Omani throne after overthrowing his father in a  coup d'état , with British support. The country was subsequently renamed the  Sultanate of Oman . Oman's history Oman officially the Sultanate of Oman is an Arabian country located in southwestern Asia. It is situated on the southeastern coast of the  Arabian Peninsula , and spans the mouth of the  Persian Gulf . Oman shares land borders with  Saudi Arabia , the  United Arab Emirates , and  Yemen ,  Muscat  is the nation's capital and largest city. From the 17th century, the Omani Sultanate was  an empire , vying with the  Portuguese   and  British  empires for influence in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. At its peak in the 19th century, Omani influence or control extended across the Strait of Hormuz to modern-day Iran, and Pakistan, and as far south as  Zanzibar . When its power declined in the 20th century, the sultanate came under the influence of the United Kingdom.
